General Ultrasound concentration

  A graduate of the Muhlenberg Schools Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program will be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology.
Demonstrate a high degree of accuracy in identifying sonographic anatomy on a CRT screen.
Demonstrate a high level of accuracy in the prudent application of sonographic energy.
Provide patients with accurate patient assessment and monitoring.
Assist the radiologist during the sonographic examination.
Meet the physical and emotional needs of their patients.
Apply sound professional and ethical judgment utilizing critical thinking skills.


Student’s Professional Goal Commitment

I understand that as a graduate of a CAAHEP accredited general sonography program, I am qualified and eligible to sit for ARDMS registries in Acoustic Physics and Instrumentation, Abdomen and Superficial Structures sonography and Obstetrical and Gynecologic sonography immediately upon successfully completing the program. In addition, I am also qualified to take the ARRT Sonography primary upon successful completion of the program.

I commit that I will take registries in Acoustic physics and Instrumentation and at least one of the specialties mentioned above and/or the ARRT Sonography primary within three months of completing the program.


PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

The program's objectives are to:

Provide the Health care community highly trained, skilled, and dedicated professionals.
Provide a knowledge base in the form of clinical and didactic experiences to properly prepare and educate entry-level Ultrasound technologists.


The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program will:

Maintain accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.
Graduate individuals who will pass the ARDMS and/or the ARRT(s) exams on the first testing.
Graduate individuals who will obtain employment in ultrasound within 12 months of successful completion of the ARDMS exam.
Graduate individuals who demonstrate involvement in continuing education.
Graduate individuals who are prepared to perform quality diagnostic ultrasound testing in a variety of health care settings.
Graduate individuals who are capable of performing testing in a technologically complex field.
Graduate individuals who are competent in assuming the roles and responsibilities of an ultrasonographer.


The program graduate will be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of clinical diagnostic Ultrasound procedures.
Demonstrate knowledge of other diagnostic procedures emphasizing indication, utility and limitations of those procedures.
Perform routine ultrasound procedures.
Recognize problems as they arise in the performance of ultrasound procedures.
Demonstrate the ability to integrate information using observation, reason, analysis and interpretative skills to perform and process diagnostic information.
Correct problems that arise in the performance of ultrasound laboratory procedures.
Recognize life-threatening results and follow up with appropriate actions.
Participate in and review data utilized in quality assurance initiatives.
Perform simple maintenance of the equipment used in the performance of ultrasound procedures.
Perform quality assurance checks on ultrasound equipment.
Participate in educating other members of the health care team.
Develop the knowledge and tools necessary to assist in the promotion of health care to patients and the community.
Communicate effectively to supervisors, peers and patients.
Exhibit a mature and professional attitude.
Act in a manner that is consistent with professional.
Participate in continuing education.
Recognize the value of continuing education to maintain and acquire new skills.
Participate in quality assurance projects within the ultrasound laboratory consistent with the standards of all hospital and laboratory credentialing organizations.
Graduates will be prepared with test taking strategies and eligible to take the ARDMS exams for Ultrasound technology.
