WHAT IS NUCLEAR MEDICINE TECHNOLOGY?

Nuclear Medicine Technology uses small amount of radioactive materials that are administered to the patient in order to evaluate the anatomy and functional status of various organs and tissues. The radioactive material is bound to a chemical that is selectively taken up by the tissue or organ of interest.

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NMT) is the allied health professional who performs these studies using computers and specialized detectors including gamma scanners, SPECT cameras and PET scanners.

Nuclear Medicine studies are used to detect various cancers, heart disease, blood clots in the lungs, gall bladder diseases, various infectious thyroid conditions, gastrointestinal bleeding and many other diseases. Nuclear Medicine Technology is also used to treat certain cancers, some blood disorders and over active thyroid glands.

Although most NMTs work in hospitals, an increasing number are also working in out-patient clinics and cardiology offices – performing Nuclear Cardiology studies. They may also move on to related jobs in research, computers and equipment applications, sales, education, nuclear pharmacy, administration and software development. Future opportunities are also emerging in molecular imaging areas.

The Program offers 2 tracks of education:

  • A Diploma in Nuclear Medicine Technology from the JFK Snyder Schools and an Associate in Science Degree from Union County College.
  • A Diploma in Nuclear Medicine Technology from the JFK Snyder Schools, an Associate in Science Degree from Union County College and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Thomas Edison College.
The Nuclear Medicine Technology Program:
  • Is a full time day program over a 13 month period (January to January).
  • Requires 30 pre-requisite general education credits.
  • Is accredited by NJ DEP and JRCNMT.
