JFK Health System Union County College

  1. Is there a waiting list for admission?
There is no waiting list for admission. However, there may be a waiting list for nursing clinical courses. Enrollment for all nursing courses (NURM100, NURM119, NURM120, NURM121, NURM122, NURM141 and NURM221) is determined by date of admittance, satisfactory completion of the science and other general education course requirements and seat availability.

  2. Should I begin to take courses on my own prior to being accepted to JFK Muhlenberg Snyder School of Nursing?
No. It is neither recommended nor necessary to do so. The JFK Muhlenberg Snyder School of Nursing program consists of two parts: the general education courses (pre-requisites and co-requisites to the nursing clinical courses), which include science and liberal arts courses, and the nursing courses (clinical). While advanced standing can be awarded, courses are not pre-requisites for acceptance. Refer to the Transfer Credit Form for more information about transferring from other colleges. You do not have to attend UNION County College first (or any other college) before applying to JFK Muhlenberg Snyder Schools' nursing program.

  3. Do I have to take pre-requisites before being accepted to the School of Nursing?
The term "pre-requisite" is not the same as the term "admission requirements." Pre-requisite courses are courses that must be completed before progressing to the next course. The pre-requisite courses listed in our curriculum are part of the nursing program. They are not admission requirements. Therefore, you do not have to complete them prior to applying for admission.

  4. What are the admission requirements?
The criteria, which concern you as the applicant, are the admission requirements outlined below. The Admissions Committee evaluates all required information and documentation.
    • Official High School Transcript or GED
REQUIRED OF ALL APPLICANTS. Overall grades are reviewed, particularly algebra, biology with a lab, chemistry with a lab and a second unit of mathematics. Applicants are required to have a “C” (70%) or higher in each subject.
    • Scholastic Assessment/Aptitude Test (SAT or ACT)
High school seniors or applicants who have graduated from high school within the last three years, must submit SAT or ACT scores. This requirement is waived for all other applicants. The Schools’ SAT code is 2452. A minimum combined score of 1200 or higher is required.
    • TEAS V Entrance Test
REQUIRED OF ALL APPLICANTS. The entrance test measures basic essential skills in Reading, Mathematics, Science and English and Language Usage. The test questions are multiple choice. Applicants should study for the exam and try to achieve the target, or higher, score in each category. Applicants applying for the Accelerated or Pathways to BSN Tracks are expected to earn higher scores. Click here for additional information.
    • Previous College Transcripts (if applicable)
Applicants with previous college experience are required to have a 2.5 cumulative GPA in all relevant courses. No grade lower than “C” will be accepted for transfer. Up to 32 general education credits may be transferred. There is also a five year time limit to transfer Anatomy and Physiology I and II, and Microbiology. Chemistry has a ten year time limit; the other general education courses do not have any time limits.
      • The School of Nursing may grant up to twenty (20) hours of advanced standing in nursing (clinical) courses that correspond in subject matter and number of credits to the JFK Muhlenberg Snyder School of Nursing courses. These courses must have been passed successfully at the school where they were taken.
        • All advanced standing in nursing courses will be granted sequentially.
        • Students transferring nursing credits will be required to complete a Skills Review with this Schools’ Clinical Laboratory Coordinator.
Nursing courses will only be considered for transfer if they were successfully completed at the previous School of Nursing and were taken within the last five years.
      • If one has ever attended UNION County College (UCC), is currently attending UCC, or has plans to attend UCC prior to enrollment in the JFK Muhlenberg Snyder School of Nursing, acceptance is contingent upon achieving and maintaining a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA). In addition, it is necessary to have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher in the courses relevant to the School of Nursing program. A grade of “C” or higher is required in all science courses. The applicant must make arrangements to have an official UNION County College transcript forwarded to the Schools’ Admission Office, following completion of courses. In the event that the applicant’s UNION County College cumulative grade point average is below a 2.0, acceptance to the School of Nursing will be cancelled.
      • Letters of Reference
Three complete references are required from individuals who are acquainted with applicant in a professional capacity. References from family members or friends are NOT acceptable.
      • Essay
This 250-word writing sample must addresses one of the three essay topics listed on page 4 of the application. The essay is evaluated on grammar, spelling, clarity of thought and on neatness.
      • In addition
        • Applicants to the Accelerated Track are required to have completed a baccalaureate degree and earn higher entrance test scores.
        • Applicants to the LPN-to-RN Career Ladder Track are required to show their current LPN licenses and submit a transcript from their LPN school.

Note: The JFK Muhlenberg Harold B. and Dorothy A. Snyder School of Nursing Curriculum includes science, general education and theory/clinical nursing courses. While many sections are offered, registration into these courses cannot be guaranteed. Registration for all nursing courses is on a seat availability basis. Seat availability means that students with advanced standing are not guaranteed enrollment in nursing courses for the semester they prefer. Students may register for other required general education courses. All biology courses (Anatomy I and II and Microbiology) have a five year time limit; chemistry has a ten year time limit. Consult the Curriculum Design page of the Schools’ Catalog for additional information.
