Muhlenberg Hospital was founded in 1877 when the residents of Plainfield realized, after a tragic accident, that their community needed a health care facility. A railroad brakeman had fallen from a passing coal train and the surgeon treating him had to amputate his leg in the only facility available, a railroad freight shed. Following this incident, the residents of Plainfield planned, financed, and built the city’s first hospital on Muhlenberg Place, now West Third Street.

The hospital bears the name of the Reverend William A. Muhlenberg, a former rector of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion in New York and the founder of St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City.

Muhlenberg Hospital moved to its present location in 1903, and has grown to become one of the largest voluntary, nonprofit hospitals in the state of New Jersey.

Muhlenberg has a long-standing commitment to education. Since the beginning, the Schools have been wholly a part of Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center.

The School of Nursing was established in 1894 when the first class of two students began their studies and were graduated two years later. Today, more than 300 students are enrolled in the program.

In 1971, the School of Nursing established an affiliation with Union County College in Cranford, New Jersey. This affiliation is known as Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center School of Nursing/Union County College Cooperative Nursing Program.

The School of Radiography was established in 1964 as a hospital-based program to meet the demand for graduate radiographers. Today the School offers all the benefits and richness of a hospital-based radiography program and the expanded educational opportunities offered through a college affiliation.

In 1982, the School of Radiography also established an affiliation with Union County College. This affiliation is approved as the Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center/Union County College Amplified Radiography Program.

The School of Nuclear Medicine Technology was established in 1998 to prepare certified nuclear medicine technologists. This program operates in affiliation with Union County College and is known as Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center/Union County College Nuclear Medical Technology Amplified Program.

The School of Radiation Therapy was established in 2000 to meet the needs of communities in northern and central New Jersey. Students from outside this area are equally welcome to attend the School. The School has multiple clinical sites so students are provided with a range of professional experiences.

The School is designed to allow students with a background in radiography to obtain a Diploma in Radiation Therapy from Muhlenberg Snyder Schools and a Bachelor of Science Degree through the Amplified Program through Union County College and Thomas Edison State College.

The School of Radiation Therapy is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology, the New Jersey Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners and approved for Veterans Training.

In addition, colleges and other institutions of higher education in New Jersey and throughout the Northeast annually send students to Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center for clinical affiliation. Clinical affiliations are offered in occupational therapy, nursing administration, social work, hospital administration, dietetics, physician assistants and preparation for certification as a paramedic.

In 1994, the School of Nursing celebrated its 100-year anniversary. The School of Radiography celebrated its 30-year anniversary.
